What name would you choose to describe yourself?
For this Sydney trio, their name DeniM, is much like an everyday item in the musical wardrobe. A melting pot of rock resulting from Enz's sweeping landscape guitar sound and philosophical lyrics, Big V's driving hard-rock influenced drum beats and Al's raw/sexy rock voice and post-punk experimentalism. Bass is shard by all three with Enz and Al alternating and it's the Big V on a simulation set up when necessary.
DeniM are rock'n'roll crusaders in an era were bands lean toward the idea of 'escapism' and straight distortion. They challenge this 'stereotyped' live rock band make up with the idea of 'togetherness' in their lyrics and by representing emotion through sonic experimentation and using an unconventional simulation setup in parts of their set. The simulation is a rack mount headed by a laptop controlled by the Big V. When the bass is played back through this set up it runs through the bass rig to capture that 'live' bass feel. The simulation also allows the band to play back 'real' audio instruments at the front of house during certain songs. "At the shows we want our fans, whom we call genes, to come on our journey with us. A journey that will hopefully lead them to think and leave them to feel great about being alive and living together" Enz remarks.
The capitals D&M is the Deep & Meaningful aspect of a rock, big rockin' rock. A sound of classic songwriting, guitar driven melodies with sonic experimentation evolving from a fusion of rock n roll and progressive psychedelics with impassioned vocals and deeply introspective philosophical lyrics in an electrifying live show. Constantly conscious of reinventing themselves as postmodern funk/pop/Indie/dance infected rock act owing equally to the experimentalism of rebellion rock of late 60's/70's and this decade's fusion rock.
Since their first show in 2003, DeniM have played over 100 live shows have included the Bondi Winter Festival, supporting the Black Seeds, The National Theatre in Melbourne, the Tasmanian Uni Bar (during a tour of Tasmania), a highly successful EP launch of Take the Music & Run at the Bridge Hotel, Christmas party at the Gaelic Theatre, the Annandale hotel and the Metro. TV appearances have included featuring on TVS' Couch program and the Italian Guide who screened a documentary on them. Radio airplay and interviews include FBi and 2RDJ fm. Their The passionate performances of their inspirational songs won the 2006 Laney band competition and saw them reach the finals in the nation-wide soundcheck and Thrive band competitions. With their music featuring on the Live at the Cat & Fiddle Vol. II compilation cd, reviewes in the local press, featuring in many documentaries and with two previous EEP's DeniM are back on the road again with an attitude that is expressed on their latest EP 'Take the Music & Run'. This ever evolving sound from an ever evolving band is maturing far beyond their green beginnings on the Sydney circuit in 2003.
"The writing, recording and final mixes were all done by us" Says Big V, from the basement exclusively run by the band 'The Bexley Sessions'. Al explains "It gave birth to the band and has been the centre of the universe ever since". "The difference from the last EP, 'Just Can?t Stop' and this one is evolution of the song itself" Explains Al. From the opening raw-sexy hendrix-feel of Chimera about multiple sides of the imagination, to the self awareness ballad My Place; from the up-tempo, foot tapping groove of This City about a big city lacking life, to spiritual lyrical connection in Someone like You this third EP shows diversity and a deeper, more meaningful growth in their songwriting. Not much escapes the attention of these guys and as the world becomes all the more interesting and exciting in 2007 so will the progress of this growing band, whose sound and lyrics are inviting us to feel the joy, celebrate the experience and remember the innocence.
