<title>Australian String Quartet 'Cantilena' - final national tour @ Queensland Conservatorium - Tuesday, 25 November 2008</title>
<description>What’s On: Australian String Quartet’s final national tour – November 2008

Tender and romantic, fiery and haunting: In a fitting finale to the Australian String Quartet’s much-lauded 2008 season, Cantilena brings together three melodic works for string quartet from three remarkable composers - Richard Meale’s evocative Cantilena Pacifica, Schubert’s lyrical Rosamunde Quartet and Tchaikovsky’s first quartet with its famous Andante cantabile.

ASQ will perform in Brisbane on Tuesday 25 November at Conservatorium Theatre, South Bank.

Following its highly-praised recent tours where the ASQ has been described as ‘immaculate, riveting, emotional and refined’, the Quartet will again bring these qualities to the stage when presenting these moving works.

As a continuation of ASQ’s ongoing commitment to supporting Australian composers, the musicians open their Cantilena tour with Australian composer Richard Meale’s exquisitely peaceful Cantilena Pacifica.

“It’s a haunting work spun from one melodic thread that presents a magical effect that leaves time standing still and allows your mind to simply drift,” says ASQ first violinist Sophie Rowell.

“From there we perform Schubert’s Rosamunde Quartet; his lyricism is tender and delicate, but underpinning this tranquillity is a searching turbulence. In contrast, Tchaikovsky wears his heart on his sleeve. His first quartet is unashamedly Russian in its romanticism and fiery passion,” says Rowell.

As part of this national tour ASQ will also perform in Perth (Friday 14 November), Adelaide (Tuesday 18 November), Melbourne (Thursday 20 November) and Sydney (Friday 21 November). And there will be two regional performances in Geraldton, Western Australian (Saturday 15 November) and Darwin, Northern Territory (Saturday 29 November).
