PLAYGROUND WEEKENDER – MORE THAN JUST A MUSIC FEST

16/02/2012 1:47:12 PM
16th February 2012 – Australia’s best loved boutique festival, Playground Weekender has announced a packed itinerary of unique entertainment to compliment its diverse line up of high-profile international and local music artists.

Andy Rigby, Playground Weekender Promoter comments:
“It’s time to raise the bar in what we offer at Playground Weekender, we want to take the festival-goers  experience to a whole new level, in terms of quality food, fun, music and entertainment.”

New for 2012 is ‘THE VILLAGE GREEN’, a focal point for the festival encompassing several entertainment hotspots, a watering hole and gourmet eateries:

‘GET FORKED’ - the Weekender is going into its sixth edition and we are growing up. This year we want to celebrate the marriage of good food and music and make sure that The Playground Weekender has more flavour than regular festivals ... thus Get Forked has been born. As the food trucks causing a stir in Sydney drive into Del Rio, expect delights from the likes of...

  • Miss Chu’s – needing no introduction is the astoundingly popular and delicious Vietnamese finger food. Enjoy this high end nosh including awesome dumplings and refreshing crushes (coconut, bananna and mint) in the surrounds of a pop-up Vietnamese village, complete with farmyard animals!
  • Cantina - track down the Cantina Mobil food van for succulent and six-hour slow-roasted gourmet Mexican fare including tacos, burritos & chilli corn. Arriba!
  • Veggie Patch – is the brainchild of the design studio, TMOD and Yulli’s restaurant. Having set out to create accessible restaurant quality food with an innovative artistic edge, Veggie Patch is devoted to providing high quality vegetarian food using ingredients sourced from local producers.  With a whole foods philosophy, using unprocessed and unrefined ingredients the stall’s output has a minimal impact on the environment, from their packaging to ingredients.
  • Grill’d will be bringing the beloved Airstream to the festival from which they will be dishing up the country’s best burgers made the old fashioned way with the highest quality, freshest ingredients.

‘THE LOCAL’ - an authentic beer and cider garden complete with Magners Irish Cider and Coopers Pale Ale on tap alongside a selection of handpicked wines and other spirits including Smirnoff, Southern Comfort and Jack Daniel’s.  Kick back, relax and enjoy a drink in the stunning surrounds.

‘SRICTLY PRANCING’ - stand up comedy by day and the best in burlesque and cabaret at night from an array of weird and wonderful performers...

  • Love Bomb will be hosting Friday night’s kooky entertainment. Expect tunes that inspire passion, body rolls, smiles, the occasional sing-along, high fives and fist pumps.
  • Catch the naughty nuns who will be running riot down at Del Rio. Tasked with sorting the sinners from the saints, they’ll entice you to reveal all in their strictly confidential Confession Booth.
  • Hott Roxx will be bringing their hilarious travelling radio roadshow to the festival, expect fun, games and lots of silliness from the faux Hawkesbury Hot Roxx FM.  Running a mok on Saturday, the tag team of Chocolate Greg Sivic and Jeff Stroker will be presenting an awards special, with all the glitz and glamour of the Logies, they will be crowning a winner of the Interpretive Dance Championships (the infamous IDCs).
  • Fresh from throwing down “the funk” in laneways & park side block parties, the Soul of Sydney DJs will be dropping everything from afro-funk, latin breaks and boogie vibrations in Sunday’s extended party set. Pick your afro & iron those those flairs as because they will be joined by the iniquitous Block Party Soul Train Dancers who will also be paying special compliment to the late Don Cornelius with their own Playground Weekender Riverside Soul Train...departing anywhere you can hear bass!
  • The Shake n Bake All Stars will be spinning a set crammed with all time greats, ultimate classics and national anthems for you to sing your heart out to.

JINGLE JANGLE JENGA’ – children and big kids a like can enjoy games of giant Jenga, Connect 4 and draughts in the sunshine.

CHAKRA KAHN’ - a range of massage treatments and healing therapies will be available to soothe aching bodies and provide some well earned TLC as part of the weekend break.  Not to mention, we’ll also have a resident hairdresser on hand, to primp and style you to perfection.

OM SHACKALACKA’ – yoga, workshops and spiritual guidance – you name it if you’re after the ultimate relaxation and rejuvenation experience, from tarot readings to tantric awakenings we’ve got it! No less than five varieties of yoga will be on offer to adults and kids throughout the course of the three days from a range of practitioners.

  • Tribal Groove N Yoga dance like nobody’s watching, feel the music and breathe. Get hot, get sweaty as you experience ZUMBA style Latin Beats.
  • Morning Revive Yoga will invite you to engage in gentle fluid movement with music to balance and nurture your system. Soothe your body, mind and spirit, easing those weary bodies before hitting the dance floor once again.
  • The Multidimensional You sessions aim to open up your heart and mind to more, encouraging the realisation that we are not just a physical body. To explore this concept, enjoy an experiential journey of self-discovery, through inner plane yoga and a unique meditation style called ‘Ignite Your Spirit’ which utilises the ancient practice of chakral breathing.  Through these techniques you will have tangible experiences of your energy body – aura, chakras and meridians, moving energy around within this and other dimensions of you.
  • Playful Power Flow aims to reenergise through the power of playful yoga, which will see you sweating out the impurities from the previous day, before cooling off with a refreshing dip in the Hawkesbury River.
  • Our bodies and voices are capable of producing an interesting range of sounds and songs. The Sound Garden Workshop will bring out your inner Kylie using vocal percussion, simple movement, breathing techniques, easy-to-learn songs and a little friendly guidance.  Non-singers will be amazed as they realise they can hold a tune.  Great for improving creative self-esteem and expression, you’ll be singing all the way home...
  • Attune yourself with nature. Create a spontaneous intuitive connection between yourself and the cosmic nature of herbs and plants. Yes that’s right, you’ll be taught how to be able to communicate directly with organic nature.
  • Beat This Body percussion, unleash your groove as you clap, snap, stomp and slap your way to a brilliant day. Explore and create your own music, dance and rhythms using  your body as an instrument.
  • Hula Hoop Yoga, combining the hoop with yoga poses adds balance, extends stretches and creates body awareness in a playful form of exercise.  Hoops at the ready as you get flexi with this new style of workout.

In addition to all of the action at the ‘The Village Green’, the stunning Del Rio Riverside resort has a range of entertainment to keep restless bodies active, including mini golf, tennis, basketball and volleyball.

Immersive art installations from a range of emerging and established artists will also be showcased across the site including...

  • Mike Watt who’ll be painting up a storm along the Riverwalk. Across the three days, Mike from Drawing Book will be creating a live mural on boards, oil drums or anything he might find washed up on a fantastical dessert island for festival goers to use as a backdrop for photos with their friends.  His artwork is being supported by Holding Pattern, an online music application that promises more control to undiscovered artists.
  • La Petite Mort a creative duo who produce and mix one-of-a-kind visuals which react to the music all around.

Once again, the notorious Fancy Dress Saturday will be in full swing for 2012, having become an attraction in itself over the years.  Hold on to your lycra senors and senoritas as The Cuban Brothers are confirmed to host the Fancy Dress catwalk show.  Leading the absurd party proceedings at the Southern Comfort Bourbon Street Bar will be Danny La Ru(e). The showbiz lovechild born when DJs Danny Bass and Uncle Ru made sweet love to the memory of the late Danny La Ru through their love of razzle dazzle, playing other people's music and wearing women's clothes!
