Andy Clockwise
Review by Satva Kuchenbecker
Andy Clockwise @ The Gaelic Club, 12/11/2005
"I love you."
A rare statement to hear in sophisticated music these days.
It immediately caught my attention when Andy sang it out. And not just mine – the other girls in the venue caught on fire hearing the first song – a sensitive indie ballad. I love you – I take you over the world – uuaahhhhh- that is exactly what we want to hear – Andy knows it and loves performing it.
The other members of the band – keyboard player, bassist, drummer and two female background singers are competent musicians who sound and look good together – definitely a band with sex appeal!
The Band
The music was a mixture – rock, folk, grunge a little electro – reminds one of the big performers of the past – Kurt Cobain, David Bowie, Frank Zappa, Jim Morrison and maybe Prince. The sound came across well and seemed absolute. The lyrics are about love, pain, broken hearts, boredom, loneliness, coming down from pills & speed and doing cocaine & champagne. One could say “Come on, get on with your life....” But this is what life for many young people is about.
Happy Fans
There is no doubt that it is hard to make sophisticated rock music and give people a good party when the venue is only half full. Andy had some loyal friends and groupies in the first rows - hot, clashy girls and pretty, metro sexual boys. It was a pleasure and cool to see how Andy makes his boys and girls touch, dance, sing and kiss. Even so, I had the impression that the people expected more glitter-glamour-fuckme-electroclash-party stuff.
Some people said that Andy grew up as a musician and is more independent, but I think he failed to totally touch the audience, considering that most people were just standing around and didn’t know what to think. Emptying a can of RTD on the guitar doesn’t really help it much, even though it is cool.
But hey Andy - I love you too and the keyboard player and the bassist and especially the drummer, I have a crush on you!
Kiss&hug,
Satva
Satva can review your gig, too (Sydney based - unless it's your shout). Are you up for it? Honest opinion: that's what you'll get. Give her a good reason to be there and we'll make it happen. Write to
